Change Background on Windows 7 Starter

August 2, 2010 |  by Nick  |  No Comments  |

Did you just buy a netbook with Windows 7 and said sweet, but you didn’t realize that you can’t change the background?  Well Windows 7 Starter is very limited and it’s great for low end computers, but why can’t they just at least allow you to change the background? I do not know why.  But I know a way around it and you can change your background to what you want.

First go download Oceanis Change Background W7 and install.  Then you want to restart your computer as it said to do.

Once you log back on, you will see this as your wallpaper.  Click on the shortcut icon on the desktop to start the program.

iTunes Issues

June 9, 2010 |  by Nick  |  2 Comments  |

That’s right, I am having some more problems with iTunes after reinstalling my operating system and installing the latest updated for iTunes and for some reason it grouped most of my music into Compilations in the artist column, see before you could go into the preferences and disable the Compilations thing, and that’s way I had always done in the past.

This time, it’s different, why you might ask?  Because there is no option to disable the freaking stupid dumb Compilations thing.  What did Apple forget to put this back when they were dissecting iTunes? Who even uses the Compilations thing?  Like I imported a bunch of CD’s to iTunes and basically all of them went into the Compilations.  I had to highlight them all and then go change yes from no on the option “part of a compilation?”  I just want to the old option back that wont show the complications under the artists.

Free Camera Control Software

April 10, 2010 |  by Nick  |  No Comments  |

I been wanting to do some time lapse photography and I own a Nikon D60 and Nikon sells software for doing this called Nikon Camera Control Pro and it said it supported my camera so I downloaded the trial version, and after like an hour of trying to figure out how to get it to work, I just gave up and started looking for alternative programs and I was lucky enough to find a free one.

That’s right, a free one called DIYPhotobits.com Camera Control, It said that it supported my camera, downloaded the software and installed it and it detected my D60 right away.  Though the interface isn’t the greatest, it’s pretty ugly and white, but it gets the job done and does it well.

There is just so much stuff you can do with this camera like tethering, time lapse, exposure bracketing and other neat stuff and they work pretty good.  I didn’t have any issues doing the time lapse.  I’ll have to test it someday outside.  Though using such software like this will require a laptop and a USB cable so you can connect your camera to your computer.

I would much rather download this for free and instead of paying Nikon for some software that never works right.  You should go try it, check out their list of cameras that work and cameras that don’t work and then go download it!  Also, check out their blog too!

With some time and effort, you could do something like this with this software:

Burn .ISO Files with ImgBurn

March 24, 2010 |  by Nick  |  No Comments  |

Have you ever downloaded a Linux ISO or maybe someone’s modified Linux operating system and the file extension is .ISO?  An ISO file is a image archive of a CD or a DVD.  ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization, which is supported by many software vendors.  You can also open these .ISO files with such software like WinZip, 7zip or WinRAR.  Alright so now I briefly told you what ISO’s are, lets talk about how we get theses images (.ISO) files on a CD or a DVD.

VideoLAN VLC Media Player

February 26, 2010 |  by Nick  |  1 Comment  |

Did you download a audio file and/or a video in a format you may or may not have seen before?  You try them, but they don’t work on your media players you have installed.  Did you try VideoLan VLC Media Player?  VLC Media Player is a free, open source that supports large number of codecs, sure I can list them all, but there is just way to many!  But, the people at VideoLAN has created a page for you that lists them all that are supported by VLC.  You can check that out here. I decided to create a little review about VLC, because I have asked a few people about VLC and they never heard of it, but they didn’t know that it can play just about every type of media format.

Clean and Organize Your Hard Drive with TreeSize Free

February 10, 2010 |  by Nick  |  No Comments  |

Do you have a fairly large hard drive and only having about 2-5gb left of space?  Wondering what’s taking up all of the space?  But you can’t find where these files are located.  I been there before and I use a free program called TreeSize Free.

TreeSize will tell you precisely where these large files are.  You can start TreeSize from the context menu of a folder or a drive and it will show you the size of this folder, including it’s subfolders.  You can select KB, MB, and GB for size options.  You can also expand this folder just like you can in explorer and you will see every size of ever subfolder.  When TreeSize is scanning your files, you can see the results in real time.  Also, TreeSize works well with Windows Explorer.

Synergy KVM Software

November 12, 2009 |  by Nick  |  1 Comment  |

logo Do you have another computer right next your main machine?  I do, I have little file server right next to my main machine and I was looking up KVM switches a while back and I just wasn’t sure that it would work with my set up, I have a Logitech G15 gaming keyboard and I have heard that people had a few issues with using it on a KVM switch.

So I recently stumbled upon a virtual KVM switch called Synergy, this is open source and they even give you the information and other stuff to help you edit the build if you would like to, But I see no need into doing it, unless you have a good reason.

It works on Windows 95 all the way to Windows 7, Unix, and Mac OSX.

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It’s intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).

Redirecting the mouse and keyboard is as simple as moving the mouse off the edge of your screen. Synergy also merges the clipboards of all the systems into one, allowing cut-and-paste between systems. Furthermore, it synchronizes screen savers so they all start and stop together and, if screen locking is enabled, only one screen requires a password to unlock them all.

The set-up of this program is really easy. Just follow the instructions at their website.

The Configuration

You can even set it up to auto start when your computer starts up so you don’t have to worry about it.

You do have to have a TC/IP network set up in order to use this, but most of use would have this set up if they have multiple computers in their office/bedroom.  It is a great application if you have a windows machine, Mac and a linux box hooked up to 3 different displays and only wants to use one mouse and one keyboard, it works great!

If you want to learn more about it, just go to their website at http://synergy2.sourceforge.net

Heres another great review about Synergy http://techjohnson.com/synergy-software
