LyricRat Will Name That Tune

March 25, 2010 |  by Nick  |  No Comments  |

Have you ever heard a song on the radio, but don’t know who the artist/singer is?  It happens to me all time!  Sure you can remember some of the lyrics and go to Google type it in and do some research, maybe you will be lucky, buy why go through all of that when there is a simple website that will do it for you? You should head over to www.lyricrat.com type in the lyrics under 140 characters and LyricRat will most likely find the song on the first click. If the first choice isn’t correct, they have possible alternatives on the bottom.

When you click on the links to the song, it will redirect you to Amazon in which you can either purchase the song or have a quick listen to make sure the song that LyricRat named is the indeed you heard on the radio.

I’m really happy that I have found this site because you don’t know how many times I hear songs on the radio and don’t know who sings it and just type it in LyricRat and sure enough, it finds the song that I am looking for.

Invention of The Barcode

October 7, 2009 |  by Nick  |  No Comments  |

Today Google’s new doodle looks like a bar code and your wondering why?

Well today is the 57th anniversary of the day the first patent was made on the bar code.  Inventors Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver filed the patent on October 1949, and it was granted, No. 2,612,994 on October 7, 1952.  The original patent was for a system that would encode data in circles, so that it could be scanned in any direction.

The barcode you see on the Google’s homepage today is code 128 encoded, which is a standard way of encoding ASCII character strings into a barcode.

The barcode is a technical innovation that has become an often unnoticed part of everyday modern day life.  The format is a global standard, where a scanner from any manufacturer can interpret almost any conforming barcode from anywhere’s.  The barcode is a great example of why uniform protocols and standards serve a greater good for everybody.

Google Profiles Improves People Search

April 23, 2009 |  by Nick  |  No Comments  |

Google’s new spruced up search mechanism will now include a special section on Google Profiles. 101345_google-profiles

You need not worry if you have common names like John, Smith, Michelle, Britney etc., as you can set up and customize your Google Profile by adding details about yourself.

Also, you can link your social profiles on several popular social networking sites like Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, Bebo, MySpace, LinkedIn, etc. Users can also share their contact details with a specific user group that the user sets up.

Google Profiles are also available at a custom URL like – http://www.google.com/profiles/UserName.

Searching information about a particular person through Google’s index would be better experience if the information has been concisely presented in the user’s Google Profile. Before you add your social networking profiles, make sure you’ve put up appropriate security filters to your public profile. This will minimize the possibility of being stalked, identity theft or even spam.

Happy Searching!

googlesnewfavicon

So Google has updated their favicon again.  Now you may want to updates Firefox’s Google search bar because it has the old Google favicon. Now you have to do this manually so you will have browse to Firefox directory in windows. Now some of you may this is going to take some more time out of your day to do this   but here’s some relief.

You can update the Firefox’s default Google search plugin to show the new Google search icon:

  1. Download this updated version of the Google search plugin. (Right click >> Save Link As)
  2. Copy it to your searchplugins folder in your Firefox install folder  (typically C:Program FilesMozilla Firefox on Windows), and overwrite the existing google.xml file.
  3. Save the file and restart Firefox.

Now you have the current favicon and can rest.

You do not need to do this anymore, since the latest version of Firefox will have this fix.  Thanks.
