Homemade Flash Diffuser

August 25, 2010 |  by Nick  |  1 Comment  |

I been doing photography for a while now and I don’t use my flash that much because when I do take pictures I’m mostly outside and therefore don’t need a flash.  However, sometimes you will need your flash especially if your subject is in front of sun cause it could make their faces really dark, in which case you will need a fill flash.  Now you typically would use a external flash but they can get expensive.  The flash I was looking at (SB-600) from Nikon was around $225 and to be honest I don’t have that kind of money at this moment so I had to make something to soften the flash.  Since I don’t have a external flash or a hot shoe flash, I am stuck with my on board flash which is direct flash and gives you hard light, dark shadows under the subjects eyes, or just over saturates it sometimes, just don’t look natural.

What I did was used was take a ruler measured from in the flash compartment, there normally is a little angled edge or what ever the flash lays down on and you kind of want that angle and with the ruler at that angle, I measure out roughly around 11cm and I measured from the eye piece or eye cup and went a little longer than 11cm, not much though.  Then I measured about 2inches across so it will cover the flash. After that I measured the distance between the two pieces from the bottom to the top and once I marked it down I made an exact copy for the other side.

Fender Strat Pick Guard Replacement

July 30, 2010 |  by Nick  |  No Comments  |

So I wanted for a while and finally decided that i’m going to replace the white pick guard on my Fender Stratocaster with a black one. I think it would at a very cool look that will fit my personality, though I never took an electric guitar apart before. But it was a new learning process for me and i’m glad I did it and now my guitar looks pretty sweet looking.  Looks almost like Stevie Ray Vaughn’s guitar besides he has a rosewood fret board and gold hardware, but still it looks sweet.

Custom Made Microphone Windscreen

May 6, 2010 |  by Nick  |  1 Comment  |

I got bored today and wanted to record some birds out in our backyard and it’s very windy today, like probably wind gusts up to around 25-40mph and so I thought today would be a good chance to mess around with some foam and see if I can get it to fit on the top of my crappy USB microphone, I managed to do it.  I mean it’s better than with out the foam, I can tell you that much.   I would like to try other foam as well to see which one works the best.  I couldn’t find much foam around the house, but I found a old still in package mop foam thing replacement that doesn’t fit our mop anymore, so I cut it up and tried to made it fit, though it split but where the mic was and where the split was, it didn’t really matter.  So here are the results, you can hear when I opened the door to take off the window screen and you will tell the difference with and with out the windscreen.

Converting AVI to iPhone Troubles

April 7, 2010 |  by Nick  |  No Comments  |

I been trying a bunch of programs, like Handbreak, Videora, WinFF, Media Coder, all that which will convert AVI files into a format the iPhone can read, well so far none of them are working.  Every time I try to add the video to the phone, iTunes says this phone can’t play this video on this phone or something like that.  The format is like .MOV, .M4V, .MPEG4.  I tried all of these formats and I can’t get any of them work!  I’ve tried tutorials online that tell me how to convert .AVI video files to a format that the iPhone can read and play, so far they don’t work.

Now I am starting to think that there may be either something wrong with the phone, or an setting. I had videos that I had converted with Videora before and they work just fine, but this was a while ago.  I wanted to add another video and I used Videora to convert them, and yes, everything was done the exact same way as before, and it wont play on the phone!  I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

Any ideas?

So you just bought your first DSLR camera and now you have more buttons, dials menus, settings and you got to learn.  You understand ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, but what’s raw?  Mostly likely when you buy a DSLR or even some high end point and shoot cameras will have optional file formats likes, Jpeg, Jpeg Fine, Raw and Raw+Jpeg.  You are wondering what Raw is aren’t you?
